Your Guide to Building a Simple Yet Effective Skincare Routine from Scratch

A routine that works is usually shorter than the one you imagine you need. Three steps done every day beat nine steps done when you remember, and skin rewards consistency far more than it rewards ambition.
Here is how to build one from nothing, in an order that lets you add to it later without starting again.

The Three Steps That Do the Work

Cleanse, moisturise, protect. Everything else is refinement. A gentle cleanser that leaves skin comfortable rather than squeaky, a moisturiser matched to your texture, and a broad-spectrum SPF every morning of the year.
If you only ever do those three, your skin will be in better condition than it would be with a shelf of serums used inconsistently.

Adding a Fourth Step

Once the base is habit — and give that a month — you can add one targeted step. Put it after cleansing and before moisturiser, and introduce it slowly.
  • Every other night for the first two weeks, then nightly if skin stays calm.
  • One new active at a time, so you know what caused what.
  • Stop if you see stinging that lasts beyond a minute, and go back to the base.

When to Change Anything

Seasons change what skin needs more than age does over a short period. The lotion that was right in July can feel thin in January, and that is a reason to layer rather than to replace.
Keep a note of what you used and when. It sounds fussy for about a week, and then it is the only reliable record you have of what actually helped.
