The Science Behind Ceramides: Why Your Skin Loves Them
Ceramides are lipids — fats that make up roughly half the material holding your outermost skin cells together. The usual analogy is mortar between bricks, and like mortar, you notice them mainly when they are missing.
Skin makes its own, but production falls with age, with cold dry air, and with anything that strips the surface faster than it can be replaced.
What They Actually Do
The barrier's job is to hold water in and keep irritants out, and ceramides are what make it watertight. When levels drop, water escapes faster than it can be replaced, and the skin that is left feels tight however much moisturiser goes on top.
That is why hydrating a damaged barrier with humectants alone tends to disappoint. Water needs something to be held by, and lipids are what holds it.
Why the Ratio Matters
Ceramides work alongside cholesterol and free fatty acids, and the research points to a rough three-to-one-to-one balance rather than to ceramides in isolation. A formula built on all three restores the barrier faster than one built on the fashionable ingredient alone.
- They suit every skin type, including oily — oil is not the same thing as barrier lipids.
- They layer well, and they do not compete with actives used earlier in a routine.
- They are best applied to slightly damp skin, which gives them water to seal in.
How We Use Them
Our moisturisers are built on that three-lipid ratio rather than on a single headline ingredient, in textures light enough that skin which already produces plenty of oil can still wear them daily.
It is an unglamorous piece of formulation. It is also the difference between skin that holds its hydration overnight and skin that feels tight again by morning.
