Everything You Need to Know About Ingredients That Truly Benefit Your Skin

There are perhaps a dozen ingredients with enough evidence behind them to be worth building a routine around. The rest are pleasant, expensive, or both.
Knowing the short list makes reading a label much faster: you are looking for a few names near the top, not for the longest list of extracts.

The Ones Worth Paying For

Niacinamide at two to five per cent improves barrier function, regulates oil and evens tone, and it is unusually well tolerated. Vitamin C protects against daytime oxidative damage and brightens over months rather than days. Retinoids remain the best-evidenced ingredient in cosmetic dermatology for texture and fine lines.
Ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are the three lipids your own barrier is built from. Replacing them is less glamorous than an active, and it is what most unhappy skin actually needs.

How to Read a Label

Ingredients are listed by weight down to one per cent, after which the order means nothing. If the thing on the front of the bottle appears after the fragrance, you are buying a claim.
  • Water, glycerin and a humectant in the first three lines is a good sign for a hydrating formula.
  • An active named in the top five is doing work; named last, it is doing marketing.
  • A short list is usually a considered one, not a cheap one.

What We Leave Out

Every formula we make is built from a small number of ingredients chosen for what they contribute, and nothing added to make the list look longer. No synthetic fragrance, no drying alcohols, no essential oils in leave-on products.
That is a constraint rather than a virtue: it means each ingredient has to earn its line, and it makes a reaction far easier to trace when one happens.
